Coeliac Bulgaria \u2013 Gluten-Free Life has been accepted as a full member of the Association of European Coeliac Societies (AOECS). The decision was made on 10 October 2026 during the 38th General Assembly, held as part of the organisation\u2019s annual conference in Amsterdam, the Netherlands.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Joining AOECS marks an important step towards stronger representation of people with coeliac disease in Bulgaria. It also enables us to contribute to international efforts to improve early diagnosis, access to safe food and healthcare, and overall quality of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

AOECS brings together patient organisations from across Europe and beyond, united by a shared goal: improving the lives of people with coeliac disease through advocacy, research, education and collaboration. Our association now joins this international network as a full member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From National Initiatives to International Collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During the General Assembly, our Vice-Chair, Ada Gulyamdzhis, presented the association\u2019s work, achievements and the key challenges facing people with coeliac disease in Bulgaria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Founded in 2018, Coeliac Bulgaria \u2013 Gluten-Free Life works to create a more informed, safer and more inclusive environment for people with coeliac disease and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In recent years, we have expanded our activities beyond individual support, actively developing partnerships with healthcare professionals, educational institutions and public authorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We work to improve early diagnosis, including through screening initiatives targeting at-risk groups. We also support the training of future culinary professionals and advocate for changes that reflect the real needs of people with coeliac disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For us, AOECS membership offers an opportunity to learn from international experience while contributing our own ideas and successful practices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bulgarian Initiative Featured in AOECS Success Stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the highlights for our association was being featured in the international publication Coeliac Success Stories 2026<\/strong>, which showcases successful initiatives by patient organisations from different countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our contribution highlights our efforts to improve school meals for children with medically required dietary needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In March 2025, we brought together several patient and civil society organisations to submit a joint proposal to the Ministry of Health. Our aim was to ensure that national regulations addressed the needs of all pupils requiring special diets for medical reasons, rather than focusing solely on children with coeliac disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, Ordinance No. H-3 was adopted in October 2025. It introduced a requirement for school menus to be adapted, where necessary, to pupils\u2019 medical diagnoses and dietary recommendations from their doctors. Special dietary products, including gluten-free and lactose-free foods, were also added to the mandatory minimum range of products offered at school food outlets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This represents an important step forward in legislation. However, considerable work remains to ensure that these provisions translate into genuinely accessible and safe food options for children in every school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The inclusion of our initiative in Coeliac Success Stories 2026<\/em> demonstrates that even organisations with limited resources can achieve meaningful change when knowledge, experience and efforts are brought together around a common goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coeliac Health 2030 \u2013 Research, Shared Challenges and Priorities for Action<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The 38th AOECS Annual Conference took place from 8 to 11 October under the theme Coeliac Health 2030: Shaping the Future of Coeliac Care<\/em> Coeliac Health 2030: Shaping the Future of Coeliac Care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event brought together representatives of patient organisations, leading healthcare professionals and researchers to discuss emerging opportunities in diagnosis and treatment, as well as the everyday challenges faced by people with coeliac disease. We will explore the most significant scientific developments in a separate article.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Particular attention was given to patient involvement in setting future research priorities. The discussions emphasised the importance of collaboration between researchers and patient organisations to ensure that scientific research addresses the actual needs of people living with coeliac disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another important focus of the conference was the need to strike a balance between strict adherence to a gluten-free diet and quality of life. Preventing gluten cross-contact remains essential, but excessive restrictions and constant anxiety around food can contribute to additional stress and social isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coeliac Youth of Europe (CYE)<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u0412 \u043a\u043e\u043d\u0444\u0435\u0440\u0435\u043d\u0446\u0438\u044f\u0442\u0430 \u0443\u0447\u0430\u0441\u0442\u0432\u0430 \u0438 Coeliac Youth of Europe (CYE)<\/strong> , the youth network of AOECS, also participated in the conference. Discussions addressed the challenges young people face when transitioning from paediatric to adult healthcare, managing their gluten-free diet independently, coping with anxiety and achieving social inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CYE is building an international support network for young people with coeliac disease. It organises youth gatherings and camps, shares information about safe gluten-free eating while travelling, and participates in European initiatives to protect young people's rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working Sessions and Discussions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Working sessions formed an important part of the conference, providing national organisations with an opportunity to discuss shared challenges and explore possibilities for joint action.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the sessions focused on patient needs and organisational development.<\/strong>It highlighted challenges that are also familiar in Bulgaria, including difficulties accessing safe food when eating away from home, limited awareness, mental health concerns and social isolation. The need for financial independence and long-term sustainability among patient organisations was also discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Key shared priorities included stronger advocacy at European level and more coordinated communication, including efforts to counter misinformation. Other important areas identified were the development of safe gluten-free dining programmes and resources supporting mental health, social inclusion and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A subsequent working session on advocacy and policy<\/strong> ocused on legislative changes aimed at strengthening the protection of the rights of people with coeliac disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the key topics was the new international Codex Alimentarius guidelines on precautionary allergen labelling (PAL), which covers statements such as \u201cMay contain traces of\u2026\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, the international framework includes a scientifically established reference dose for gluten, intended to support the assessment of risks arising from unintended cross-contact during food production. The aim is to ensure that precautionary labelling is based on consistent risk assessment rather than varying assumptions and practices among manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussions identified several key areas for joint advocacy, including financial support for patients and safe gluten-free dining in restaurants and other food service establishments. Further priorities included improved access to screening and diagnosis across all age groups, appropriate school meals and mandatory training in safe gluten-free food handling for professionals working in the food sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These discussions demonstrated that national approaches may differ, but collaboration between organisations can help establish higher common standards and more effective protection of patients\u2019 rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New Connections and Opportunities for Collaboration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The conference also gave us the opportunity to meet remarkable people \u2013 representatives of patient organisations, doctors, researchers and other professionals whose expertise and dedication are helping to improve the lives of people with coeliac disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These encounters were among the most valuable aspects of our participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We particularly value the opportunity to develop closer cooperation with patient organisations across the Balkan region. The challenges we share create a strong foundation for joint initiatives, the exchange of good practices and mutual support in building sustainable organisations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We returned from Amsterdam not only with new knowledge, but also with valuable connections, fresh ideas and an even clearer understanding of the importance of the international community in achieving lasting change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We would like to thank the AOECS team, our hosts at the Dutch Coeliac Society, and all the colleagues and professionals we had the pleasure of meeting for their openness, willingness to share their experience and inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
