Information for tourists with coeliac disease visiting Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a beautiful destination with sea, mountains, historic cities, and a rich traditional cuisine. However, for people with coeliac disease, eating out and safely finding gluten-free food can be challenging.

Although Bulgarian and European legislation requires allergens to be labelled in restaurants and on packaged foods, this does not automatically mean that the food is safe for people with coeliac disease.

In practice, awareness of the condition and the risk of cross-contamination is still limited, including in many modern restaurants and tourist establishments.

Many establishments interpret “gluten-free” as simply removing bread, pasta, or visible flour from a dish, but they are often unaware of the risks of cross-contamination and hidden gluten. Very often, food is prepared on shared grills, in deep fryers with shared oil, with shared utensils, or on surfaces where wheat products are handled.

In Bulgarian cuisine there are many hidden sources of gluten:

  • sauces thickened with flour or starch

  • ready-made spice mixes and flavourings

  • soups and stews

  • meat preparations and meatballs

  • processed meats and sausages

  • fried foods prepared in shared oil

A very common practice is to toast bread on the same grill where meat, vegetables, or potatoes are cooked. This creates a high risk of cross-contamination.

At present, Bulgaria has no gluten-free certified restaurants or establishments that guarantee safe dining for people with coeliac disease

Restaurants and venues

Some restaurants may be able to accommodate requests after a discussion with a manager or chef, but safety depends entirely on the knowledge and attention of the specific staff at that moment. For this reason, eating out in Bulgaria should always be considered a personal risk.

Gluten-free products

In larger cities and supermarkets, products labelled as

  • „Без глутен“

  • “Gluten Free”

  • and the crossed-grain symbol can be found.

Accommodation

The safest option for tourists with coeliac disease is usually

  • accommodation with self-catering facilities,
  • preparing food on site,
  • staying in places where there is good understanding of cross-contamination,
  • and using certified packaged gluten-free products.

България е прекрасно място за посещение, но понякога е нужна малко повече подготовка и търпение, тъй като осведомеността не винаги е на необходимото ниво.
